It is February, which usually mean summer and the middle of the ocean swim season in Sydney. Each weekend from the beginning of January to the middle of April there is a swim on somewhere in or near the city. In late January and into February the following swims are usually held: -There is the Big swim from Palm Beach (where Home and Away is filmed) to Whale Beach http://www.thebigswim.org.au;… Read More

Well it has been a while since my readers have been rewarded with a new posting. I thought it was time to do my annual update of the swim season. Loyal readers will recognise that I use the season that starts on 1 June each year, and finishes on 31 May. While this may seem odd, it does match with some of the tests used for annual tallies of distances swum in… Read More

The first Sunday in February is the date for the Coles Classic at Manly Beach in Sydney’s northern suburbs. It is named after the Coles family who started the event at Bondi, before it was moved to Manly. However, the Freshwater swim that was originally scheduled for earlier in the season was adversely impacted by big seas, forcing the postponement to this date. Usually Easter is a great time to swim with warm water, and small surf, so it appeared to be a good idea. The week of the swim was superb… Read More

I was full of anticipation to do my 50th ocean swim race at the beach I grew up on at Caves Beach just south of Newcastle 150km north of Sydney. But the weather gods have interfered and the swim has been postponed until 10 March, when it will clash with the Sydney Harbour Classic at the Opera House. The weather pushed in a strong southerly breeze, and a nice 2m swell from… Read More
This race was on again, and it was good to do it for the second year running. However, this year I decided to enter both the one km and the two km race. I had entered early to save me some money and also to have the timing chips and swim caps sent to me in the post. This saved me having to queue up a few days before the race at… Read More

I had entered the Coles Classic swim at Manly. Unlike most of the swims which were run by surf lifesaving clubs, this one was run by a media company as part of their strategy of supporting the community. This meant that you had to enter several weeks before the swim and pay higher prices. With most ocean swims I would check the swell forecast and if it was too big for… Read More
