As we waited for the long swim we talked about the Irish Muppet and his intention to swim a 13 km race in Galway in July when the water may be as warm as 16 degrees (today it was around 24). A part of me was envious of his plans, as I would love to go back to NYC again for the summer. By this time the Reporter had shown up and… Read More

North Bondi beach was the site for my 50th swim, after the swim at Caves Beach last weekend was postponed. This is the beach where our squad does a number of sessions in the surf, so I have become quite familiar with it. I have also undertaken this races a few times before, so I decided to only enter the 2 km event in order to savour my milestone. The morning was… Read More

Australia Day 26 January 2013. The day our country celebrates the colonisation of the continent by the British 225 years ago. The day when the first fleet full of convicts who were no longer wanted in the 13 former colonies were re-located. I have been told that I had two ancestors on this voyage: a seaman and a female convict. They were probably on board ship in this place waiting to come… Read More

The last Sunday in November is the date for the swim around Wedding Cake Island from Coogee Beach. This is the third time I had entered this event, having done the swim in November 2011 and again in April 2012. However, this year I have decided to only enter the long race and leave the one km warm up races for later in the season. I had noticed last year that I… Read More

Each year a swim is held in New York that circumnavigates Manhattan Island. Sounds easy swimming around an island. Except this swim is 45 km long if you swim in a straight line, and the winner took seven and a half hours to finish.  This year’s event was held on 23 June 2012, and I was there. Well when I say I was there, that does not mean I swam in the… Read More

So the 2012 season is now over. What was my progress over the season? Well to recap in 2011 I had competed in six races with a total distance of 13.4 kms, and I struggled to finish some of those races. For distance covered in Australia I was ranked 1,398 out of 43,462 and in NSW 509th out of 17,154. For the oceanswim handicap series in 2011 I did three swims for… Read More

This swim is the last swim in Sydney for the season. It involves a swim of ten km from North Bondi Beach to Watsons Bay in Sydney Harbour. It involves a swim 500m out from the beach, turn left to head north up the coast until you enter Sydney Harbour, and then turn south to finish inside the harbour. It requires a boat and most swimmers also have a paddler to accompany them…. Read More

ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance for all of those who have served our nation during times of conflict. The day falls on the anniversary of the attack by the Allies at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25th April 1915.  It was the day that Australia and New Zealand came of age and fought for the British Empire based on an ambitious plan by the Lord Of The Admiralty Winston Churchill. The plan… Read More

Back to North Bondi for their second swim of the season. As this was my home beach for surf training I was familiar with the landmarks. I had also swum at the race in January so I knew the course. However, you never know what conditions the ocean can bring. Race day was warm and sunny and Lake Bondi was at its most benign with a gentle one foot swell, warm water and… Read More

North Bondi has the fortune to host two swims each season. There was an added bonus to do both the short and long swims on this day, and at the second swim in February: there was a free trip to Hawaii to swim in the Waikiki Roughwater swim. I had trained quite often at this beach, and I was familiar with the conditions. So I entered both the one km and the… Read More
